The Two-Fold Purpose of Life

Think about the purpose of our everyday lives from the very beginning of Scripture. We see how God created us with a purpose at the very beginning. Only a couple of lines into Genesis 1:27 we read, “God created man in his own image. In the image of God, he created them. Male and female he created them, and God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. And have dominion over the fish in the sea, and over the birds in the heavens, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”

So, from the start of Scripture, we see a two-fold purpose here for human life, for your life, for my life. God created us to enjoy his grace in a relationship with him. So God creates man and woman in his image, with the unique capacity to relate to him—to walk with him. God created us with a unique purpose and capacity—the ability to know God. The first thing God did after he created man and woman. He blessed them. This is the pure, unadulterated goodness of God being poured out upon his prize creation. Then he says, after he blessed them, “Now be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and subdue it.” In other words, “Fill all creation with my image, with my blessing, with my goodness.”

So, God created us to enjoy his grace—our relationship with Him. God created us to exault his glory to the ends of the earth. These initial verses in the Bible set the stage for an entire book that is permeated by this purpose.
